Chris Norton

Founder

On October 16, 2010, playing for Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, Chris was severely injured while making a tackle on a kickoff, fracturing his C3-C4 vertebrae. After initially being told he had a 3% chance of ever regaining movement below the neck, Chris has defied the odds every step of the way, demonstrating a faith and determination to overcome that has inspired thousands. Through faith, family, and friends Chris has shown a CAN do attitude, never missing a day of therapy in since the day of this injury. Chris started the foundation fall of 2012 to help other individuals going through a spinal cord injury.

Terry Norton

Board President
Director, Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC)

Terry Norton is the Director of the Des Moines Area Community College Jasper County Career Academy. Terry has over 20 years of experience in education and training, both in the corporate sector as well as k-12 and post-secondary education. Terry earned a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from the University of Iowa and a Masters of Art in Teaching from Drake University.

Hannah Gaveske

Board Member

Hannah is a certified athletic trainer that works for the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA where she specializes in high trauma sports such as BMX. She received both her bachelors of science and masters of applied sport science emphasizing in human performance and muscle physiology from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse. Hannah Served as head athletic trainer for the Luther College football team for one year prior to working in the sports medicine department at the Olympic Training Center.

Patrick G. Vickers, J.D

Board Co-Vice President

Patrick Vickers is a graduate of The University of Iowa and William Mitchell College of Law. He has been a partner with Vickers Law Office in Greene, Iowa since 1989. He and his wife, Gaylene, have four children.

Megan Gill, PT, DPT

Board Member
Clinical Lead Physical Therapist for Spinal Cord Injury, Mayo Clinic

Megan currently holds the position as a Clinical Lead Physical Therapy Specialist at Mayo Clinic for the spinal cord injury (SCI) program. She has been the clinical lead since 2009 and has been with Mayo Clinic since 2004. Megan received her Bachelor of Science degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato, in 2001 and pursued her Master’s in Physical Therapy at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine graduating in 2004. In 2011, Megan completed her Doctorate in Physical Therapy through The College of St. Scholastica.

Tom Ostwald

Board Member

Tom earned a Bachelors degree in finance from Arizona State University. He worked in the consumer finance industry for 20 yrs most recently with OneMain Financial. Tom suffered a spinal cord injury on 12/2/1012 and since that time, has focused his time rehabbing and trying to recover from his injuries. Tom was so inspired when he attended the first SCI-CAN Overcoming Adversity Fundraiser that he became active in Fundraising for SCI-CAN.

Mike Durnin

Board Member

Assistant Head Coach for the University of Dubuque Spartans. Durnin had been the head football coach at Luther College in Decorah, IA when Chris’ injury occurred. Mike has also served as an assistant coach at Minnesota State – Mankato, Yankton College, University of Puget Sound, Illinois State and UW – La Crosse. During this time, Mike has coached numerous All-Conference players. Mike is a member of the AFCA and serves on the Public Relations Committee. Mike has also served on the NCAA DIII West Region Advisory Committee and has been a frequent playoff site rep for the DIII Football Playoffs. Mike is a frequent clinic speaker and is active each summer coaching at various camps throughout the U.S.

Jennessa Luzum OTR/L

Board Member

Jennessa Luzum has been an Occupational Therapist for over 10 years. She obtained a B.S. in Psychology from Iowa State University in 1999 and then a M.S. in Occupational Therapy from Colorado State University in 2002. Jennessa began her career in Rochester, Minnesota where she worked for Mayo Clinic on the Skilled Rehabilitation Unit and was a Rehab Director of a Skilled Nursing Facility. In 2006, Jennessa and her family moved back to Decorah, IA where she has been employed at Winneshiek Medical Center.
