Every Christmas I have to watch National Lampoons: Christmas Vacation… I love it. Clark Griswold’s antics never get old. If you haven’t watched it, I encourage you to do so. I wrote a speech about Clark Griswold in a class for school and I want to share it with everyone. I wrote about two of his admirable characteristics: passion & perseverance. These characteristics I believe we should all possess!
Clark Griswold Tribute
It was Christmas Eve, the night was cold, you could taste the brisk moist air on your lips, the sky sprinkled with stars as they shined down on the earth as its stage. A man stood proudly in the soft white powder snow, with hands on his hips, head up high towards the sky with a smile. There are 25,000 lights that buzz behind him, his demeanor would suggest he had just achieved the greatest accomplishment known to man, like a football coach who had just won the Super Bowl, or a mountain climber who just climbed Mt. Everest. Then he whispered to himself “I did it”.
This man is Clark W. Griswold Jr, star character in the National Lampoon’s Vacation films, known infamously for being an overly enthusiastic family-man. Clark constantly endures obstacles but it never waivers his drive to reach his goal. His only wish for the holidays was to have what he called a “good old-fashioned family Christmas” but everything seems to go awry. However, he is unbelievably passionate about making sure his family has a wonderful time and he perseveres through all the unexpected challenges. Clark is the epitome of the quotes “go big or go home” and “if there is will there is a way.” This is why Clark is admirable, this is why Clark stands so proudly, this is why Clark is successful… Therefore, let’s honor his passion and his perseverance.
What does it mean to be passionate? It it is having or showing intense emotion. It is a very powerful feeling. Clark goes to extreme measures to try to make his family happy because he is passionate about having a great family experience. Even if it means putting up 25,000 lights on a house or hiking cross country in the frigid cold to cut down that perfect Christmas tree. He goes big and goes home. One thing Clark does not lack is passion.
Think about a world where everyone was as passionate about life as Clark. We are not quite ourselves until we find our passion, it brings out who we truly are, it helps us have a direction in life. Figure out what you are passionate about and pursue it. Your passion could be animals, teaching, athletics, or music. Howard Thurman said it best,”Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive”. Passion drives one to extreme lengths to make what might be considered impossible possible. The enthusiasm and the strong emotion that derives from passion is contagious, it spreads to so many people. Therefore, let’s all live with passion.
What does it mean to have perseverance? It is the persistent effort to move forward despite difficulty in achieving success. Clark faced difficulties every step of the way to achieve his “good old-fashioned family Christmas”. For example, after his frigid hike to the perfect Christmas tree, Clark realized he didn’t bring a saw but that did not stop him from bringing a 15 foot tree home. He had will and found a way. One thing Clark does not lack is perseverance.
Think about a world where everyone persevered like Clark. Every day we face challenges, some are small and some are big but regardless we constantly endure challenges. Whether it is oversleeping and missing your 8am class that you have a test in or getting a flat tire on the way to a job interview. We can’t let it ruin our day, we have to keep going. It is the obstacles and the challenges along the way that make the finish line that much more triumphant. All great things never happened without sacrifice and hardships. Therefore, let’s all live with perseverance.
The best way to celebrate Clark Griswold is to learn from Clark Griswold. We have all enjoyed watching and laughing over the years at Clark’s crazy character, but let’s not forget the admirable characteristics he also possesses of passion and perseverance. Learn from Clark and you too will find success. Discover your passion, and pursue it. Persevere when times get tough, never stop aspiring for your goals. My hope for everyone is to someday like Clark, stand proudly and whisper “I did it”…
