The SCICAN Foundation event at Prairie Meadows was a success.
The synopsis in case you missed it:
Over $70,000 were raised for spinal cord injury due to the efforts of those involved both in attendance and away for the evening. Tom Ostwald shared his story as he joined the board. Bob Bardwell shared his story and a bit about wheelchair camp. Abby shared her story for the first time in front of a big crowd receiving a scholarship to attend wheelchair camp. I was honored to be an attendee, share Chris’ pursuit video, and represent the Second Shot team in receiving a scholarship to surprise two adaptive outdoorsmen for a wheelchair pursuit.
And, Chris delivered his story and message which left me reflecting on the takeaway from the event and the stories.
The takeaway exists in the words from the auctioneer. Simple and direct before he put on an auctioneering show he said (in paraphrase): After seeing the people speak tonight who cannot walk and have been through so much, we don’t have problems. Be grateful for what you have.
Simple words have powerful meaning when applied.
Jimmy Valvano upon his death said, “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.”
Chris’ dad Terry said, “Don’t let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do.”
And Chris said, “I won’t.”
